Garden General Info

Gardening. Growing ornamental flowers, tasty fresh vegetables, and fruits is what comes to mind when we hear the words garden or gardening. Many folks who live in rural or residential areas will grow a garden for pleasure and to supplement their foodstuffs…especially to offset the high costs of fruit and vegetables that have become rather expensive now-a-days. Usually a garden is located on the land where a residence or home is situated, but it can be located on a roof, on a balcony, in a windowbox, or on a patio, or nearly anywhere a person may have a sunny space available.

You can also find gardening being done in non-residential “green” areas, such as public parks, botanical or zoological gardens, etc. Generally, a staff of gardeners or groundskeepers takes care of the garden or gardens.

Indoor gardening has become very prevalent due to many people living in apts. in the city where there is little or no yard space available to grow a traditional garden. Indoor gardening is also often refered to as container gardening, as various types of pots, bowls, baskets, etc. are used to contain the plants being grown. Container gardening is growing plants in any type of container either indoors or outdoors. The usual types of containers are pots, hanging baskets, and planters. But, nearly anything can be made into a growing container.

The major difference between gardening and farming comes down to size. Basic gardening is genereally either done as a hobby or for food supplementation, but farming Gardening is somewhat labor-intensive but uses only a few tools. Generally one would use nothing more than a spade or hoe, a seed carrying container and a watering can. Farming often uses one or several irrigation systems, large amounts of chemical fertilizers and harvesting machines.

Some people have taken to using mechanized gardening tools, such as the small hand tillers to help with their gardening…especially totally organic gardens. Organic gardening has been becoming much more popular with people who grow gardens for personal pleasure and use.

Organic gardening is considered to be a viable and excellent alternative to using chemical fertilizers and pesticides. In countries like Japan, for instance, the people will use any food waste, animal, and even human waste to naturaly fertilize their garden soil. By using natural predators like ladybugs, praying mantises, garden spiders, etc. to eat and help rid your garden of harmful pests like whiteflies, aphids, grasshoppers, etc. you can ensure a bountiful crop that is also more healthful and naturally tastes better than anything grown with chemical fertilizers and that has had poisonous substances sprayed all over them.
